How Long Can I Afford to Be Unemployed?

Your financial runway is the number of months your available resources can cover essential costs. It is an estimate, but even a rough estimate can replace vague fear with a practical timeline.

01Use a simple runway formula

Add accessible cash, confirmed final payments and income you can reasonably rely on. Divide that amount by your essential monthly shortfall. If essential expenses are 3,000 and reliable household income is 1,000, your shortfall is 2,000. Accessible resources of 12,000 would provide an estimated six months of runway.

Do not count uncertain bonuses, hoped-for freelance work, credit-card limits or assets that would be difficult or costly to sell.

02Define essential expenses honestly

  • Housing: rent or mortgage, basic maintenance and required charges.
  • Food and household necessities—not your ideal budget and not an unrealistically severe one.
  • Utilities, essential communication and internet needed for job seeking.
  • Transport, insurance, medicine, childcare and minimum debt payments.
  • Irregular essentials converted to a monthly amount, such as annual insurance or school costs.

03Choose a response for your runway

  • Less than one month: protect housing, food, health and utilities; investigate official assistance and hardship support immediately.
  • One to three months: reduce optional spending now and run a focused search for suitable work and temporary income.
  • Three to six months: maintain discipline while targeting roles carefully; review progress every week.
  • More than six months: preserve your buffer and use the time deliberately—do not assume the search will be quick.

04Run three scenarios

Calculate a minimum, realistic and cautious scenario. Change the start date of new income, possible benefits and one-off expenses. A range is more useful than a falsely precise number.

  • Best reasonable case: income resumes relatively quickly.
  • Planning case: the search takes longer than you hope.
  • Stress case: an unexpected essential cost occurs before work resumes.

05Review weekly, not constantly

Update the calculation when real information changes: a payment arrives, spending changes or an offer becomes likely. Checking it several times a day increases anxiety without improving the plan.

Common questions

Questions people often ask

Should retirement savings be included?

Usually treat retirement funds separately unless they are legally accessible and you have considered tax, penalties and long-term effects.

Is a longer runway always better?

It provides more options, but extreme cuts can harm health and job-search effectiveness. Protect essential wellbeing as well as cash.
