Before you begin

This is general information, not medical, legal or financial advice. Services and rights vary by country. If anyone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

01Days 1–3: stabilise

  • Confirm final pay, benefits, references and key dates.
  • Estimate your financial runway and reduce optional spending.
  • Tell trusted people and arrange practical support.
  • Write a neutral explanation of why the role ended.
  • Protect sleep, meals, movement and prescribed healthcare.

02Days 4–7: define your target

  • Choose one primary role target and one realistic adjacent target.
  • Collect five examples showing results you delivered.
  • Update your résumé headline, recent experience and contact details.
  • Refresh your online profile without rewriting your entire history.
  • Create a list of employers, recruiters and people to contact.

03Week 2: reconnect and test

  • Have three to five genuine career conversations.
  • Contact relevant recruiters with a specific message.
  • Apply selectively to roles that substantially match your target.
  • Practise a two-minute career introduction and two achievement stories.
  • Review which messages receive replies and improve them.

04Week 3: build momentum

  • Continue targeted applications and warm introductions.
  • Prepare examples for common interview questions.
  • Research salary ranges and decide your minimum acceptable conditions.
  • Consider temporary, consulting or adjacent work if your runway requires it.
  • Schedule one activity unrelated to the job search that restores energy.

05Week 4: review evidence and adjust

Count useful conversations, recruiter responses, interviews and progressed applications—not only offers. If activity produces no conversations, improve targeting and outreach. If interviews do not progress, strengthen examples and practise. Change the part of the process that evidence shows is weak.

  • Keep a repeatable weekday routine.
  • Set an end time for job-search activity.
  • Choose three priorities for the next 30 days.

Common questions

Questions people often ask

How many jobs should I apply for each day?

There is no universal number. Prioritise roles you can credibly perform and applications you can tailor. Track whether your activity produces conversations.

What if I need any income immediately?

Run two searches at once: one for stabilising income and another for your longer-term target. The temporary choice does not have to define your career.
